As the outdoor temperatures start to rise, the number of pests in and around your home will also start to rise. In most instances, various pests – such as insects – are considered to be cold-blooded. When temperatures heat up, these pests will start to multiply at rapid rates. As insects increase in hot temperatures, larger-sized pests – such as rodents – will also start to increase as the insects are considered to be ideal food sources. In this comprehensive guide, we will outline the pests that thrive in hot weather and steps that may be taken to eliminate them.
Bedbugs
Bedbugs are very small insects that actually feed directly on blood, which results in bites and rashes on the skin. These pests are considered to have a high level of resilience and they are highly prolific breeders. Just in two months, these insects are capable of producing up to 500 eggs. Bedbugs are known for nesting inside and around headboards, chairs, and mattresses. The insects are capable of living without any food source for up to a year and a half. It has been scientifically proven that bedbugs are gaining a high level of resilience to the various types of pesticides available on the market – be it over-the-counter or commercial pesticides. It has been determined, though, that commercial pesticides are much more effective than that of over-the-counter pesticides.
Flying Ants
Flying ants – which are often called “alates” – are the mature black garden ants – both male and female. These ants swarm in the summer months in an attempt to find a mate. The most common months where these are noticeable are the hottest – July and August. While these pests may prove to be troubling, the tunneling activities that they engage in are said to improve the quality of the soil. The activities of flying ants also provide a solid source of food for many birds.
Flies
It does not matter if it is a house fly or a blue bottle fly, flies are extremely common within the various states throughout the country. These pests are known for carrying a wide assortment of viruses and diseases. This stems from their feeding on organic materials and other types of waste that are decaying. Flies are most common at the end of the Month of May and peak at the late period of the summer months.
Cockroaches
It has been said that these nasty bugs are capable of surviving the apocalypse and – surprisingly – the scientists in Purdue University in the State of Indiana are now agreeing. There are several different types of cockroach species and many are now becoming immune to certain types of insecticides. These insects are typically found in dark places that are warm or in cupboards where food is found where they are capable of feeding on hair, dust, and food debris. These insects are found in all seasons and in all states, but thrive in environments that are warm.
Mosquitos
Mosquitos are most active during the warmer months of the year. These insects are highly attracted to stagnant water that is standing and humans. It is said that a female has the capability of picking up on the scent of a human and/or carbon dioxide that is exhaled from up to 170 feet. Mosquitos are capable of transmitting diseases and parasites that are capable of causing illnesses or deaths in people, dogs, cats, and horses.
Gnats
While we are on the topic of insects that fly and thrive in the heat, we cannot forget to mention gnats. These insects are highly attracted to environments that thrive within the heat and are highly humid. As temperatures rise, so will gnat activity. If you water outdoors often or you keep the soil on your property moist, you will find that you have a higher level of gnat activity.
Rats
A rat infestation is most commonly experienced in the cold months but may also be experienced during the hot months of the year. Not only can this type of infestation result in devastation with your home, it can have a negative impact on your well-being. Rats carry many diseases that may be transferred to humans and pets. Examples of these diseases include Listeria and Salmonella. Damage to the property may also occur as these pests are known for chewing or gnawing on just about anything. Rats are attracted to locations that provide shelter, food, and water. A bad infestation can result in the devaluing of your home.
Fruit Flies
Fruits and Vegetables that are extra ripe will attract fruit flies. These insects are most commonly observed flying around bowls that contain fruit. They may also infest drains, dustbins with debris, mops that contain moisture and other items. They breed during periods of warm weather.
Ground Beetles
This group of beetles includes up wo 40,000 different species. These beetles are highly attracted to white types of lights and are capable of making their way through very small gaps. They thrive during the summer months and will make their way inside of a home in order to get out of harsh weather conditions. In addition to ground beetles, other types of beetles are common within the summer months. These include carpet beetles and weevils.
Ticks
Ticks may make their way through the home by both people and their pets. They may also squeeze into small spaces in order to access the home; however, this is rare. These pests carry Lyme disease and are very difficult to remove from the skin. If not extracted properly, many complications may occur. The hot summer months are when ticks thrive.
Mice
Mice are small mammals that carry the same types of diseases as rats. They mark the territory where they move with urine that contains harmful types of bacteria. These marks will attract other mice to enter into the same areas. These creatures will pass on diseases and may also chew on components.
Slugs and Snails
Slugs and snails commonly become active during the summer months. Eventually, these pests will make their way into your home. What makes this invasion bad is the fact that the creatures leave behind a slime when they move about.
Ant
During the summer months, it is common for ants to make their way into your home. You must be certain to ensure that your home is completely clean and that residue is cleaned immediately from any type of food source. If food debris forms on the counters or the floor, be sure to remove that debris immediately. Food items such as sugar, jelly, and honey should be sealed in an airtight container. If you treat for ants, be careful if children and/or pets are in the home because the poison could harm them.
Hornets
Hornets are in abundance during the summer months due to the fact that they actually prey on insects that are widely available when it is hot outside – such as bees. These creatures often move about through timber, soil, and potted plants. If These pests feel threatened, they instantly become aggressive and may sting. The sting from the hornet is very painful and even dangerous for those that are allergic to the insects.
Maybugs
While often considered a bit on the cute side, Maybugs – which are often referred to as “June Bugs” – are devastating to gardens. They prefer to feed on leaves, flowers, and other types of natural debris. These insects typically come out in the Month of May and will remain on the active side until the end of July or the end of August. While active, they are capable of damaging plants, grass, and flowers. Eventually, they will become so abundant and will cause to much damage that the garden you have will not be able to be treated any longer. These live in the soil and also damage lawns.
